Take heart! Be of Good Cheer! (John 16:33)

Sermon on 4 December 2022 by Ps Paul

Introduction

Jesus revealed to the disciples his impending death and resurrection. You can imagine that the disciples did not have an easy time, hearing that Jesus was going to die. But Jesus tells us to let our hearts be at peace.

Message

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

1. Our focus should be on Jesus, not the world.

In our lives, it is unavoidable that we have troubles. But Jesus tells us that if we follow Him, we do not have to walking in darkness, because He is the light. We still have to overcome these problems, but we do not have to let our problems take over our hearts.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” – John 8:12

2. Peace from God is far greater than the tribulations (trials and sorrows) from the world

Jesus knows that our hearts tend to worry a lot and have fears. But He is teaching us to allow our hearts to be at peace. God’s peace comes from His words. God’s peace is with you. Let God’s peace guide your hearts; don’t let worldly fears cripple you.

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:7

3. Jesus is the Overcomer. We are also overcomers!

There is nothing that can stop Jesus. Even death did not have a grip on Jesus. What more any other issues that we face? As disciples of Jesus, let us overcome challenges with His peace in us.

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. – Romans 8:37

4. Be strong and courageous to obey God. God’s peace is with us.

Do not doubt His words.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. – Joshua 1:7

Closing

Jesus has overcome death itself. Likewise, we have to overcome our sins. Christ has set us free through His blood. No matter the situation, we have this hope because Jesus is with us. Let His words be a guide to us; let us not conform to the patterns of the world. What God says matters more. What we should choose to do is to obey. In doing so, His peace will guard our hearts. Even on tough days, we can still sing praises in His name. Isn’t it better to have Jesus with us, that we can celebrate every moment? Hallelujah!
